Good As Lily by Derek Kirk Kim

Good as Lily (Minx) Good as Lily by Derek Kirk Kim

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Grace Kwon's 18th birthday celebration with her friends in the park ends rather bizarrely when ends up buying a pinate from a cart instead of ice cream and then when she finally breaks it open it not only lands on her head, but also is EMPTY! :( When she realizes in the night that she's left her cool new t-shirt from her guy pal in the park she sneaks back to get it only to find 3 more versions of herself there. How did this happen? What is she going to do about herself at 6, 29 and 70 strolling about? How will she keep it from her parents? AHHH!
This was actually one of the best young adult graphic novels I've come across. I was beginning to think it was impossible for people to write a graphic novel with any depth! Jeesh! Anyway, this one has given me hope! I'm going to stick to the Minx books and see if there are any others that raise above the shallow waters. Sadly the following article says that DC Comics cancelled the Minx line of books so when the ones they had in production are all out, that's it! How sad! Just when they were getting good. Is this true? Now where do I go for young adult graphic novels? :(

The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong

The Summoning (Darkest Powers, #1) The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Chloe Saunders leads a dream life at A.R. Gurney School of the Arts. She studies film and theater, her passions, and hopes to be a film director some day. She's a bit quiet and her dad is gone about 98% of the time, but other than that life was ok. That is until she decided to dye her hair with red streaks and got her period finally, unfortunately the ghost of a janitor with a melted face chases her through the school building and it takes medication and a stretcher to get her out of there. Apparently after you attack your teachers, they'd rather you not come back to school anytime soon so she ends up at a group home called Lyle House which specializes in mentally troubled teens.
This was really good. It takes a while to get used to her seeing ghosts in their condition they died in and to get to know the characters of Lyle House, but once that all falls into place you have a nice thrilling and mysterious young adult book. I can't wait to try out the 2nd one. Check out the website just for the main character:

Beastly by Alex Finn

Beastly Beastly by Alex Flinn

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Kyle Kingsley is at the top of the food chain in every way in life; gorgeous, wealthy, sporty, dating the hottest girl, etc. His father has raised him to believe that only the most attractive people are worth anything in life. On All Hallow's Eve he plays his last evil prank on a homely, green haired classmate only to be turned into the extreme ugliness that he is on the inside with only 2 years until one can see past his beastly exterior to love him. If no one does in the 2 years allowed, he remains a beast forever.

I had such high hopes for this one since I have a bit of an obsession for fair tales and especially retold or fractured fairy tales. Sadly this was a bit of a disappointment. It was ok, but nothing too exceptional. On the other hand, it looks like the movie they've made from it will be great! Check it out at

The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong

The Awakening (Darkest Powers, #2) The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Chloe Saunders is now on the run from the Lyle House and the Edison Group after finding out that she and others like her are part of a science experiment and have been since being in the womb. Derek, Tori, Simon, Rae and Liz all continue to be a part of Chloe's new world which has turned her life upside-down and inside-out while she also tries to come to terms with the fact that she'd a necromancer. As Chloe discovers how powerful a necromancer she really is, she begins to understand how dangerous she really could be. She also becomes closer and closer with Derek as he deals with his changes which have begun way too early. I loved this 2nd book in the Darkest Powers Series. The 1st one was good, but very predictable. This one has a deeper development to it and depth that I really appreciated after so many others that are so shallow in this genre. Check it out! I can't wait to get my hands on the 3rd, The Reckoning!

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Grace and Sam are from two completely different worlds that circle around one another closer and closer from the time they 1st meet 6 years before the present time. Can soulmates be found at first site? What happens when you only have a very sho...rt time with that soulmate before they leave you forever? I loved how Stiefvater used alternating points of view for the two main characters, Grace & Sam. She also included the current temperature outside which seems so bizarre out of context and was weird when I first noticed it, but makes total sense as you become immersed in Grace & Sam's world. See if you become as obsessed with Grace and Sam as I did. This book took over my life today! :) Great read; I can't wait for Linger AND Forever!

Maze of Bones (39 Clues, book 1) by Rick Riordan

Amy and Dan Cahill, 2 orphans who have lost everything attend their grandmother's funeral and reading of her will only to be challenged into accepting to be part of a hunt for 39 Clues which will lead to a treasure which will make the owner the most powerful person in the world. The problem? Their other Cahill relatives who are also after the treasure and have formed teams and will fight to the death if needed.
I LOVED this and can't wait to get my hands on the next one! I used to be completely addicted to mysteries (Nancy Drew, Sherlock Holmes, etc.) and this is exactly like those old classics! The best part about this was how it brought in our American history with it. The fact that it's also all about 2 kids is great too.

The New York Four by Brian Wood & Ryan Kelly

The New York Four The New York Four by Brian Wood

Cute story! I love the dynamics which show Riley growing from the shy girl into the more confident one at NYU while also showing the way that our virtual lives and relationships can take over. Try it out! See what you think.

This Book of Bayern was a bit different and hard to latch onto at times. It didn't quite go the route that I thought it would, which seemed to keep me frustrated at times. I liked, as I always do, being immersed in a land of characters I'm already friends with but struggled with Rin's major conflicts since they were conflicts I couldn't sympathize with. I still enjoyed the overall story of the girls, but just didn't enjoy this main character. Try it and tell me what you thought of this one!
