Cover Reveal: The Collector by Victoria Scott

We are thrilled that the 1st cover reveal we are involved in is for none other than Victoria Scott who we have followed as a blogger for quite some time! Her debut YA novel sounds so FUN! Check it out...

The Collector
(A Dante Walker Novel, Book 1)
Author: Victoria Scott
Release date: March 2013
Published by: Entangled Teen Publishing

Parents, lock up your daughters, 'cause Dante's come to play. This bad boy can make even the nicest girl naughty, but the tables turn when someone steals his heart.

About The Collector...
Dante Walker is flippin' awesome, and he knows it. His good looks, killer charm and stellar confidence have made him one of hell's best - a soul collector. His job is simple, weed through humanity and label those round rears with a big red good or bad stamp. Old Saint Nick gets the good guys, and he gets the fun ones. Bad-and-tag.
Sealing souls is nothing personal. Dante's an equal opportunity collector and doesn't want it any other way. But he'll have to adjust, because Boss Man has given him a new assignment:
Collect Charlie Cooper's soul within 10 days.
Dante doesn't know why Boss Man wants Charlie, nor does he care. This assignment means only one thing to him, and that's a permanent ticket out of hell. But after Dante meets the quirky, Nerd Alert chick he's come to collect - he realizes this assignment will test his abilities as a collector and uncover emotions deeply buried.

Review: The Poison Eaters and Other Stories by Holly Black

The Poison Eaters: And Other Stories
Author: Holly Black
Release Date: March 22, 2011
Published by: McElderry
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

One touch from a Poison Eater and you will drop dead at her feet. Within 88 days of a bite from a Cold one you'll become so hungry for blood and warmth you will bite anyone nearby you. If you ever meet the Devil, be sure to be just as clever and cheating as he is or your soul will certainly be his. When dealing with an Elf who wants to curse you, be sure to wear gold. And most of all...don't keep your secrets or your secrets will keep eventually you...

My thoughts: This was a delicious break from the normalcy of life around me. I adored the darkness and pain that Holly Black turns into beautiful stories. I will freely admit that there were a couple that I was both completely turned off by and/or didn't "get" at all. On the other hand, there were many that I adored and will be reading again. In some of the stories you can almost see or feel the original Grimm's Fairytale that they blossomed from, and others are completely new and untouched stories like Coldtown. One of my favorites of course was The Land of Heart's Desires where I got to peek back in on all of my favorites from Black's Modern Faerie Tale series. Loved that series! So dark and raw and real while also completely fantasy!

My favorites: The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, The Night Market, The Coat of Stars, and The Land of Heart's Desire. My absolute favorite was The Night Market though. It made me think of the magic, beauty and love that seeped into my soul while reading Valiant (my favorite Holly Black book.)

If you're looking for something different, or don't have time for a full book right now then this is for you! It was great because I could read a story while I waited for a video to load on YOUTube or while the dryer was finishing up. This is why I love short story collections. Give them a try and let me know what you think. Which ones are your favorites?

Reviews: Magic Under Glass & Magic Under Stone by Jaclyn Dolamore

~Book 1~
Magic Under Glass
Author: Jaclyn Dolamore
Release Date: August 28, 2010
Published by: Bloomsbury U.S.A. Children's Books
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Who wouldn’t enjoy a story that involves a piano-playing automaton who is actually a fairy prince?

Nimira originally moved to Lorinar to make her fortune but ends up singing at a theater as a trouser girl. She is offered a chance to improve her life, but she couldn’t have anticipated the world she would soon uncover. Nimira gets pulled into a world of intrigue when she is asked by a wealthy man to come to his home and sing with his recently purchased automaton.

Hollin Parry, the wealthy man, is a sorcerer who has secrets that need to be kept and, unfortunately, he is being manipulated by a powerful leader of the council of sorcerers. With a land dispute between Lorinar and the Fairies, war is on the horizon, and there are people who want to see peace and those who want to see war.

How will Nimira free Erris, the fairy prince trapped in an automaton’s clockwork body? And how will she keep him safe from the machinations of a wicked sorcerer?

This is a story for those who want to enjoy some magical adventures and work their way through political intrigue.

~Book 2~

Author: Jaclyn Dolamore
Release date: February 28, 2012
Published by: Bloomsbury U.S.A. Children's Books
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The second story begins after Nimira has managed to “free” Erris, sort-of, from his clockwork body. Unfortunately, there is some necromancer magic going on that involves Erris’ soul being alive within the clockwork frame, but he no longer has a body. Erris and Nimira have learned of a powerful necromancer who may know the answers to Erris’ problem, so they set out on a journey.

What they soon discover is a treat for Erris who believed all his royal family had been killed 30 years ago during the first war between Lorinar and the Fairies. It turns out that this necromancer had fallen in love with Erris’ sister, and together, they had a child!

This story is all about discovery (how to get a body for Erris), more intrigue (now that Erris is “alive”, his distant fairy relatives who took over the throne want him dead-dead), and romance (can Erris and Nimira’s love survive these confusing and tumultuous times?).

While this book’s adventure read a little slower than the first story, I still enjoyed the journey and was satisfied with the ending.

He's good looking but SO good at unhinged creepy!

Magic Under Stone by Jaclyn Dolamore...

Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Shatter Me
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Release date: November 1, 2011
Published by: HarperTeen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Juliette hasn't been touched or touched anyone in 264 days. Her touch = death. She was eagerly handed over years ago to a government run asylum for the safety of all by her parents after the unthinkable happened. She counts the seconds, the walls, the cracks...

My thoughts: AWESOME!!!! Seriously. This was an amazing thrill-ride for me from cover to cover! Holy cow! From the beginning as you dive straight into the main character's mentally and physically ravaged existence (which reminded me of V for Vendetta), and then as she's harvested by The Reestablishment to be used as a weapon of ultimate power we really begin to see what has happened to the world Tahereh Mafi has created for us to experience. The people have very little and The Reestablishment, who promised SO MANY things, has everything now at the point of MANY guns! It all really resonated with me for some reason. I just loved this world and Juliette! She is an amazing character. I don't want to tell you too much and ruin anything for you, so I'm going to make sure to leave out the coolest bits that didn't even happen until near the end. :)

Another part that really made this book for me was the was SO good! I loved the writing! The crossed out words that are thought and not thought! The words that she doesn't dare think or speak. There are SO many amazing quotes in this book that I read and then thought "I have to write this down! It's SO amazing I want to be able to have it later!" It's the longest quotelist I have so far on one book! :) I will tell you that birds are a very cool part of the story and her wanting to be able to fly away or just see a bird fly which she thinks is a myth but it gives her hope...which I just loved!

Final thoughts: If you like dystopians, adventure, psychological suspense, or kick-butt characters w/powers and without...this is for you! RUN out and get it immediately! I cannot wait for the next book, Unravel Me! Also, if you have a chance to meet Tahereh...DO IT! She is hilarious and fascinating!

Check out this super cool swag we got from her! It's my new FAVORITE!! :D

The year is 1876, and there's something strange and deadly loose in Philadelphia...
Eleanor Fitt has a lot to worry about. Her brother has gone missing, her family has fallen on hard times, and her mother is determined to marry her off to any rich young man who walks by. But this is nothing compared to what she's just read in the newspaper-
The Dead are rising in Philadelphia.
And then, in a frightening attack, a zombie delivers a letter to Eleanor...from her brother.
Whoever is controlling the Dead army has taken her brother as well. If Eleanor is going to find him, she'll have to venture into the lab of the notorious Spirit-Hunters, who protect the city from supernatural forces. But as Eleanor spends more time with the Spirit-Hunters, including their maddeningly stubborn yet handsome inventor, Daniel, the situation becomes dire. And now, not only is her reputation on the line, but her very life may hang in the balance.

This isn't a book trailer, but it's a really cool author video that made me want to read this awesome-sounding book!

Since Rachel decided to do something a bit different, I took the opportunity to show you one of my favorite videos about a book coming out from this Spring...

I love this video! It's so fascinating to see the creative process involved in creating a book cover! I ADORE book covers! They mean everything to me and my students are the same way when they are looking for books in one of my LMCs. A great cover= a book getting picked up and checked out!

And as she delves deeper into the mystery of Jasper's abduction she uncovers some devastating truths that destroy everything she has grown up to believe, but she also learns to love as she has never loved before. (Summary from Goodreads)

Oh my goodness! What a cool dystopian idea. I think this sounds like a great romantic adventure (a Romeo & Juliet-esque love; one that should never be as defined by society). This is a "to read" for me.

Review: Intangible by J. Meyers

by J. Meyers
Release Date: January 31, 2012
Published by: Indie Author :)
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What if you could see visions of the future? What if your best friend, the other half of your soul was lying in a pool of their own blood in the last one you had? What would you do to try to change it?

My thoughts: This was great! I loved it! It reminded me a bit of a show I used to really love called Heroes. Each person has a special ability and they slowly discover each other all over the world, but it all starts with one girl! This is much the same with Sera and Luke each having an ability and others finding them who also have something special about them. Plus there's the mystery from he very beginning of knowing that Sera is going to die because Luke as Seen it and he has never had a vision which hasn't come true. There were tons of fun things in this book. I really liked the twins and their personalities; Fey was a really cool character as well. Jonas was very interesting and I really liked the background on him and that he wanted to stay the way he was. So many great things but I don't want to ruin it all for you!
One thing I really didn't like was this bullying character, Naomi, and what Sera did to her. I thought it was an incredibly bad move using her gift because people reading the book who might have an issue similar to this certainly couldn't use their gift to deal with a bully in the same way. Usually when there's a bullying situation the character either learns to stand up for themselves or to ignore the bully. Nothing was really learned here. (This is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.) Overall the amazing creativeness and heartfelt characters that made you wish you had best friends like this were awesome! What a great addition to the YA world of books!

Final thoughts: I can't wait to see what happens next, who they'll meet and what they'll be able to do!

Review: Dead Beautiful by Yvonne Woon

Dead Beautiful
by Yvonne Woon
Release Date: September 21, 2010
Published by: Hyperion Books CH
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I really, really want to talk about what the mystery is, but I can’t because then I’d reveal the big realization that Renee Winters has about 2/3rds of the way into the book.

Okay, so what can I tell you? Renee is a 16-year-old girl who has enjoyed a beautiful life with her parents, living in California. But the story starts out on the day that Renee discovers her parents dead in the forest. Their death is strange: cotton in their mouths and coins around their bodies. At this point her estranged grandfather enters the picture as her guardian. He is stiff and formal and very hard to connect to and he tells Renee that she is going to go to boarding school in Maine. The only appealing thing about this move is that it is the same school where her mom and dad met.

Once she gets to school, she meets this very dark and mysterious boy named Dante (with a name like that, he’d have to be dark and mysterious—am I right?!?). He has the reputation of being connected to a close-knit Advanced Latin group—yes, Dante speaks and understands Latin, strange:) Unfortunately, this Latin group experienced some deaths the previous school year (Dante found the body), and, since then, Dante has distanced himself from the kids at school and life in general.

Renee with her sassy attitude and tell-it-like-it-is conversational style has a funny encounter with Dante on the first day of school, and from that point forward, Dante and Renee can’t seem to stay out of each other’s way. One hint I’ll give you about their relationship – it’s very “Thus, with a kiss, I die.” Only…you don’t. And all of you who are thinking VAMPIRES—banish the thought (though that was my original thinking when I read the title).

All I can tell you is that the mystery of what is going on at the boarding school is worth the read, and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series called Life Eternal (and again, it’s not a story about vampires—shocking, I know.)

A private cottage on Star Lake in northern WI. I used to take a pile of books with me when we camped when my husband and I were first together. The pile would be done when we were on our way home! I miss those days of reading, fishing and ice cream.

On the California Coast near Camp Pendleton. Sitting under an umbrella by the ocean and reading is as perfect as it gets for me.
Happy reading!

Review: Intuition by J. Meyers (Intangible 0.5)

Author: J. Meyers
Release Date: October 17, 2011
Published by:  Indie Author
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

What if you got to see the future? What if you could never get there in time? What if you had a vision of someone you loved more than anything and you knew you couldn't change it? That's exactly what Luke has to deal with. How will he save his twin Sera? I can't wait to find out in book one, Intangible!

My thoughts: Nice tease for the 1st book while also getting us introduced not only to the two main characters but to what they can do as well. I do have to say that it was a bit awkward and very short though. I'm very glad it was a free prequel! On to book one! :)

Review: Timepiece by Myra McEntire

Author: Myra McEntire
Release Date: June 12, 2012
Published by: EgmontUSA
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What if you could feel everything that everyone around you was feeling? Would you be able to handle it? Would it crush you? Would it control you? This is what Kaleb Ballard deals with every single day of his life. Well, some days he deals with it, and some days he just drowns it all with numbness by self-medicating. Unfortunately when the evil and completely corrupt Jack Landers continues to destroy the time continuum, the Hourglass gang is given an ultimatum to stop Jack or else everyone's lines will be rewound by Chronos.
Will the gang be able to even find Landers? They not only don't know "where" he is, but the bigger question is "when"? As he pops in and out of places and times taunting Kaleb and completely obliterating his life, and the people's memories around him that he loves most, the real question begins to be...will there be any hope left soon? As the lines of time begin to literally bleed into one another, will Kaleb be able to hold it all together and unravel it all before it's too late?

My thoughts: For some reason I didn't even read the description of this one because I just knew I wanted to read it immediately from NetGalley, so when I started in and it was Kaleb's POV (point-of-view) instead of Emerson's I was so thrilled! What a great character to have a story told through! Now I'm dying to know who's POV the next book will be from!? Any guesses from the crowd?

This was such an amazing roller coaster ride from beginning to end just like book one was, except that this one had so many more players to keep track of and more twists and turns to deal with. How Myra McEntire keeps all of her threads straight as she's weaving these stories is completely beyond me! See this is why I'm a reader and a gusher of books, not a writer of them! :) Once again I never had a moment when I "knew" what was going to happen next and ever got it right. I hoped beyond all hopes that Kaleb and Lily would end up together, but you'll have to read the book to find out the answer to that one! (That's right, too bad! Read it! *insert evil laugh*) I think delving into the secondary characters and their lives past and present was incredibly fascinating, especially Lily! She was one of my favorite characters from book one and I was thrilled she had a bigger part in this book along with Kaleb!

By the way, this cover is AMAZING! I can't wait to see the cover for the 3rd book after book one and two both had such gorgeous covers! Just plain incredible. They draw people straight to them when they are sitting out on display in the library. Well book one does right now in my LMC, but I'm betting book two will too! I can't wait to get it for them! These books are at the top of my "I want to own them" list now! Thank you SO much Myra McEntire for writing these books...they are an amazing gift to the young adult literature world.

p.s. I'm SO excited that they've been optioned by 20th Century Fox! WOOT! WOOT!

Final thoughts: If you like roller coaster adventures from cover to cover with twists and turns you never even thought to imagine, then this is for you! Go out now and grab it! What are you waiting for, seriously!?
