Review: Nightspell by Leah Cypress

Nightspell
Author:  Leah Cypess
Series: Mistwood, Book 2
Release date: May 31, 2011
Published by: Greenwillow Books
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Darri feels extreme guilt for not saving her little sister from her betrothal to the ghost kingdom’s Prince Kestin. In Kestin’s kingdom, anyone who is murdered returns as a ghost—vengeance is the only way to free the soul. Unfortunately, many ghosts have become so comfortable with their life after death existence that they have created an imbalance between the living and the dead in this kingdom. Court intrigues and murder lead to a very unsafe living/death environment, and Callie is no longer safe.

Now, several years later Darri has the chance to exchange her life for her sister’s and help her sister escape the dark kingdom. However, Darri soon discovers that there is more going on in this haunted kingdom than she could have ever imagined. Her plan to help her sister quickly unravels, and she must work to discover a new way to save herself and her sister from the evil that lurks in the shadows of Ghostland.

My Thoughts: I loved Darri. Her power, her anger, and her guilt all combine in this fierce, beautiful girl. I’m not much of a reader of ghost stories, but this is so much more than that. The idea that in this kingdom, people who are murdered have a chance to seek revenge and kill their killers in order to release their souls is such a cool concept!

This story has murder, mystery, sibling hate and love, revenge plots, mystical beings, and much more. I read it in a day—and that says a lot for the interest, flow and writing of a novel. Even if you’re not into ghosts, I say read it!
