True Stories Fall Blog Tour

Are you eager for some true stories to curl up by the fire with this fall? Then you are in luck because Zest Books has those in spades! Whether you're into heroic animal stories, the dark side of love, or the trials of growing up, these true stories have it all.

Today I'm featuring Tomboy: A Graphic Memoir
Author: Liz Prince
Release date: September 2, 2014
Published by: ZestBooks
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Liz Prince refused to wear dresses growing up, and pretty soon she was exactly one of the guys...but was she? And did she really want to be? Were there others like her out there? Or was she just a freak? Was it all just hopeless because it sure feels that way in middle school when you don't fit in anywhere!?

My thoughts: This was an interesting one! I read this one last night and this morning and really liked it. It actually made me think of a family member who's very young right now and fits this personality perfectly! She wears ALL boy clothing, even boys swim trunks and tops for the pool. I kept thinking about where her life will go and wondering if she is a boy stuck in a girl's body, or she is truly just a girl who loves boy stuff.

When I was growing up, which seemed to be about the same time-frame as the author, I too was a big tomboy wearing jeans and t-shirts but I also wore dresses to church, weddings, etc. for my mother and did all the things I was taught to do as a young lady. Went through a kissing streak like the author that has never really ended. I also loved snakes, lizards, DIRT, and all those things that the guys did including the fact that I never fit in with girls. They were just never my hang out thing. It never worked out. I don't know if it's the "cattiness", "nastiness" or the gossip, probably not the gossip because honestly some guys are the worst gossips ever! :) Anyway, guys are just simple. Now that I'm an adult and forced to be with both men and women, mostly women, in my profession I honestly struggle. I have a very hard time connecting. I can dress the dress, because I know how to "fake it until I make it" but it's not really me. If you could see my skin you'd know that the perfect outfits, shoes, etc. are SO NOT the real me. I mean my whole back is covered in tattoos! ;) I do love getting my nails done, but they always have black in them along with the pink. I have CRAZY curly hair that never behaves, and have a REALLY hard time keeping my language appropriate.

Anyway, my point is that it was VERY HARD growing up through everyone else's expectations of what a girl/woman "should be", or "should look like". I completely got that part. Kids are VICIOUS! Those bus scenes were very SPOT ON! I have rearranged our whole lives so that my girls do not have to ride the bus for any reason if possible not only because of my past experiences like this author's, but also because of my daughter's in only two years of riding only in the mornings. Once you get to a point where you realize that you can wear what you want (within reason depending on your job, etc.) and that it's really only YOU who you need to worry about then you are a much happier human.

BUT, this is such a long hard journey...I'm hoping that this book would help those who are in that middle where they are feeling lost and alone realize there ARE others out there! :) You are not alone and it does get better someday! This will be a good addition to our library.
