Artist Beatrix Adams knows exactly how she's spending the summer before her senior year. Determined to follow in Leonardo da Vinci's footsteps, she's ready to tackle the one thing that will give her an advantage in a museum-sponsored scholarship contest: drawing actual cadavers. But when she tries to sneak her way into the hospital's Willed Body program and missed the last metro train home, she meets a boy who turn her summer plans upside down.

Jack is charming, wildly attractive...and possibly one of San Francisco's most notorious graffiti artists. On midnight buses and city rooftops, Beatrix begins to see who Jack really is--and tries to uncover what he's hiding that leaves him so wounded. But will these secrets come back to haunt him? Or will the skeletons in Beatrix's own family's closet tear them apart? (Summary from Goodreads)

I'm going to grab this one up because the storyline caught my eye. What other story has a main character trying to sneak in to view cadavers for artistic purposes? Plus it sounds like there is a little bit of mystery and romance in the story, too. I'm in.

Three royal houses ruling three interplanetary systems are on the brink of collapse, and they must either ally together or tear each other apart in order for their people to survive.

Asa is the youngest daughter of the house of Fane, which has been fighting a devastating food and energy crisis for far too long. She thinks she can save her family's livelihood by posing as her oldest sister in an arranged marriage with Eagle, the heir to the throne of the house of Westlet. The appearance of her mother, a traitor who defected to the house of Galton, adds fuel to the fire, while Asa also tries to save her sister Wren's life...possibly from the hands of their own father.

But as Asa and Eagle forge a genuine bond, will secrets from the past and the urgent needs of their people in the present keep them divided? (Summary from Goodreads)

I am a complete sucker for a story like this I have found in the last couple of years and this one sounds good! I can't wait to try it.

Review: Lumiere

Author: Jacqueline Garlick
Series: The Illumination Paradox, Book 1
Release date: December 15, 2014
Published by: Skyscape
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When Eyelet literally runs into Urlick while fleeing her city for her life. Neither one has any idea what they've gotten themselves into, but they soon realize they may be out of their league of knowledge of what others should be like and act like. Still pursued by Smrt and his group of thugs, can Eyelet figure out the mystery of the machine, stay out of Smrt's grasp AND keep her biggest secret safe?

My thoughts: This was an adventure from beginning to end with 2 main characters who I could easily get behind. There are so many things that have been twisted and turned in this place that Garlick has created that I really wanted to see both of them win over their oppressors!

Garlick's created a world where there is SO much oppression and fear about so many things that you are immediately sucked into their troubled lives! The story is told in alternating POV between Eyelet and Urlick. Both main characters have extremely interesting histories that you never quite get enough of. You get bits and pieces as they reveal themselves to you and to each other.

The technology is fantastic in this book. There are so many neat gadgets and gizmos that many different people have created to help them in their lives or a weapons. There is also a very cool element of birds being a big part of this story which was very cool and added to the mystic of it all.

I cannot wait to read book 2 which I just found was released in September! There are so many unanswered questions to be answered!

Review: Red Queen

Red Queen
Author: Victoria Aveyard
Series: Red Queen, Book 1
Release date: February 10, 2015
Published by: HarperTeen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Reds and Silvers live VERY different lives, even in a different world from each other you could say. To have Silver blood means powers, elite status, and so much more. Red blood means you work for the Silvers...your sole purpose in life is serve them in some form. When red blooded Mare walks into the palace she had no idea she had powers...powers the silver bloods are desperate to hide from the world.

My thoughts: THIS. WAS. EPIC. I'm serious. A huge WOW! Talk about brilliant story, development and conclusion. The characters are so well done that I was instantly drawn in. It was X-Men meets Hunger Games.

One of the first things I liked was Mare. She lives a crappy life stealing and trying to exist as best she can while also trying to help her family. Then when she gets a job working at the palace, she discovers in a very public silvery way that she has a power even though she's red-bloodied! Uh oh right!? Definitely! They don't know what to do about her, so they decide to keep her close adding her into the silvery fray of youth who are being trained to rule the next generation.

Mare enters a world unlike any she's known her entire life so far. There's the training with her newly found powers of course, but there's also a whole lot of scary ruling class intrigue thrown in as well. Here are a few quotes for you to ponder...

"The gods rule is still. They have come down from the stars. And they are no longer kind."

"As beautiful as this world is, it's just as dangerous. People who are not useful, people who make mistakes, they can be removed."

"I'll teach you what it's like to know fear."

Don't these make you curious!? This is an amazing beginning to a new series that I cannot wait to continue reading with book 2! If you haven't tried this one, you need to!

Review: Strange Skies

Strange Skies
Author: Kristi Helvig
Series: Burn Out, Book 2
Release date: April 28, 2015
Published by: EgmontUSA
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Now that Tora has finally made it to the new Earth, Caelia, she has even more problems since she happens to be enjoying the new planet from a cell. How will she find James? How will she get out so she can find her father's weapons that he died for? And the big question...is there anyone she can trust?

My thoughts: This was just as thrilling a ride as book 1 was. I had been waiting for this one for some time but wasn't disappointed at all. Helvig did a great job of continuing Tora's adventurous struggle.

Book 2 begins with Tora on a completely new planet after leaving the sun-scorched Earth behind her where you can't even go outside without a special suit on or you'll literally burn up. It's a few months later and when a chance to escape happens, she takes it! This 2nd book is just as full of action and adventure as the 1st one. This is a fantastic science fiction read with a spunky main character you'll love! Check it out sometime and let me know what you thought.
